TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES OF AIADA[ Six Sigma ] [ Pollution Control ] [ Value Engineering ] [ Excellence in Entrepreneurship ] Work Shop on six sigma green belt course
Let's begin by defining Sigma as it relates to a business or manufacturing process. Six Sigma Qualtec, a leading Six Sigma consulting firm, defines Sigma as "a metric that indicates how well that process is performing. The higher the sigma value, the higher the performance, quality of the organization's process. Sigma measures the capability of the process to perform defect-free work, with a defect being anything that results in customer dissatisfaction."
The basic idea behind the Six Sigma philosophy is continuously to reduce product and process variation. Seemingly small variations in environmental conditions, operator performance, raw materials and machinery can cause accumulative quality problems. Six Sigma is today's most dynamic management approach for dramatically improving Product and process quality- along with employee enthusiasm and involvement. It defines measures, analyzes, improves and controls them to tie quality improvement directly to bottom-line results.
Simply put, Six Sigma management is about tying quality improvement directly to financial results and its goal is to link internal processes and system management to end consumer requirements. Six Sigma is a business strategy that fosters a cultural shift at all levels, permeating departments, functional groups, and at all levels of management, thus, it changes the outlook and practices of everyone in the organization. The term Six Sigma Black Belt was first introduced by the Motorola Corporation to describe employees who are trained and experienced in applying statistical techniques to business processes and procedures so that they can make major positive contributions to the bottom line Black belts use the five-step approach to instigate cost-saving projects as follows: definition of problem; measurement of characteristics that are critical-to-quality (CTQ), analysis using benchmarking and gap studies, improvement and control. A Green Belt employee in Motorola is trained and experienced in using Six Sigma tools and techniques. Green belts are not required to have the same level of experience in the use of statistics or leadership skills.
